On February 26, 2020, the Institute hosted a thematic meeting, organized jointly with the Joint Congress of Azerbaijanis of Ukraine ("OKAU"), dedicated to honoring the victims of the tragedy in the Azerbaijan city of Khojaly. During the event, the issue of the importance of implementing a policy of multiculturalism, tolerance and other aspects of peaceful coexistence between peoples were discussed.
The event was attended by the director of the institute Mykola Izha, the chairman of the OKAU in Odessa Namik Hajiyev, the Consul General of the Turkish Republic in Odessa Sadin Ayildiz, the chairman of the Odessa regional organization of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine Yurii Rabotin, representatives of public authorities, NGO, national and cultural organizations mass media, as well as employees of the international cooperation and communications departments of the institution.
The Director of the Institute opened the conference with a welcoming address, emphasizing the importance of conducting dialogue to prevent armed conflict in the world. During the event, moderated by OKAU member Fazil Askerov, the participants made a brief excursion into the history of the Caucasus, told about the root causes of the conflict in Nagornyi-Karabakh and its tragic consequences in the town of Khojaly in 1992. The audience was also shown a new documentary film "Azerbaijanis in Khojali", shot by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. All present honored the memory of the innocent victims with a moment of silence.
In the course of the Azerbaijani-Ukrainian thematic meeting, a discussion on ways of resolving interethnic conflicts and possible ways of reconciliation was launched, which resulted in different instruments being offered to prevent such tragedies. All participants expressed their hope for such events in the future.
